The God Who Sees

Beloved family and friends, Today I want to speak about a name our God is given that has held hurting people for a long time.

In Genesis 16, Hagar is running. She is used, dismissed, pregnant, and alone in the wilderness. No platform. No promise she can feel. No one coming to look for her. Then the angel of the Lord finds her by a spring on the way to Shur and speaks to her.

She gives God this name: El Roi — “You are the God who sees me” (Genesis 16:13).

Not the God who sees crowds.

The God who sees me.

Some of you know what it is to feel passed over. Busy rooms. Crazy weeks. Prayers that seem to go nowhere. You keep showing up, but you wonder if anyone — including Heaven — has noticed.

Hear this: you are not invisible to Him. Hagar was not in a sanctuary. She was on a desert road. God did not wait for her to get her life in order. He met her in the wilderness and called her by the truth of her situation. He still does that.

Psalm 139 says He knows when you sit and when you rise. He is familiar with all your ways. Jesus said not even a sparrow falls apart from the Father, and you are worth more than many sparrows (Matthew 10:29-31).

The woman at the well in John 4 thought she was just drawing water. Jesus told her everything she ever did — not to shame her, but to show her she was known and still wanted.

Zacchaeus climbed a tree to see Jesus. Jesus looked up, called his name, and went to his house (Luke 19:1-10).

Again and again, the story is the same. God sees. God comes near. God calls. Seeing is not the end of it. The God who sees also leads.

He told Hagar to go back, and He gave her a promise in the same breath. He does not only notice your pain. He speaks into your next step. You may not have the whole map. You have the God who already sees the road.

So if you are here feeling small, overlooked, or worn thin, lift your head. El Roi has not lost you in the crowd. He saw you this week. He sees you now. And He is not finished with you.

Will you let yourself be seen today?

Will you stop hiding from the One who already knows and already loves you?

Let’s pray together: Lord Jesus, You are the God who sees. Thank You that nothing about my life is hidden from You, and nothing about me makes You turn away. You saw Hagar in the wilderness. You saw the woman at the well. You saw Zacchaeus in the tree. You see me. Forgive me for believing I am overlooked. I bring You the places that feel unseen. Speak. Lead. Hold me. I rest in the truth that I am known and I am Yours. In Your name, Amen. If this message touched your heart, share it with someone who needs to know they are not invisible. You are seen. You are loved. And the God who sees you is near.

With love and faith,
